About us

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world. It focuses on grappling and fighting on the ground.

BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger and stronger person by using proper technique and leverage.

The focus is on taking the fight to the ground and then applying a choke hold or joint lock to defeat the opponent.

The BJJ Lab

The BJJ Lab was started in 2013 by JB and a small group of BJJ students who wanted to train together in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Word got around and the group kept growing until it turned into the BJJ school that it is today.

We believe in the Caio Terra association motto "technique conquers all" and at the BJJ Lab we focus a lot on technique and all the small details that make a technique work.

Our instructors

JB, black belt

JB founded the BJJ Lab because he wanted to create a place where people could train in a friendly, supportive and relaxed atmosphere.

He has been training martial arts for over twenty years. JB has lived and trained BJJ in California, Australia and the UK before he moved to Switzerland.

JB is a black belt in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Pat, brown belt

Pat received his brown belt from Caio Terra in 2017. He spends multiple weeks every year training in San Jose (USA) at the CTA headquarters to learn from the 12 time world champion himself.

He likes to coach and often travels to tournaments to support the BJJ Lab competitors. He does his best to prepare the competitors by working on an individualized gameplan for each competitor and through a scientific approach to conditioning.

Sevi, brown belt

Sevi is one of our smallest guys and has competed in the lightest weight division (rooster weight). He proves that technique beats size and strength every day on the mat.

He has traveled all around the world to train and learn Jiu Jitsu. Sevi is a very active competitor and always encourages our members to compete. He believes that doing competitions is a good way to improve your Jiu Jitsu.

Joonas, purple belt

Joonas started BJJ at the Straight Blast Gym in Estonia and trained there until blue belt. He joined the BJJ Lab when he moved to Zurich.

He has excellent teaching skills and is always helping people at the lab, even when he is not teaching a class. With a great mustache comes great responsibility.
